New York Edge Music is a full-service music and entertainment company representing exceptional bands, ensembles and DJs for live performance bookings at private parties, public concerts, corporate events, galas and fundraisers.
Growing up in Brooklyn, my grandmother was the life of every family gathering. She played the piano and sang and everybody loved her. So… I inherited the music bug!
My mom, a piano playing Brooklyn public school teacher did her best to instill “DLE” (doctor, lawyer, or engineer) in me, however I felt compelled to pursue my passion for music and studied music theory and composition in college.
I honed my performance, guitar, and vocal skills playing the club circuit and I got my intro to performing at concerts, events, and weddings when a musician friend who worked for for one of the “big offices” (“big office” is musician-speak for agencies that hire freelance musicians for multiple bands and performances), told me the company he worked for was looking for a guitarist who sings.
Fast forward… as I moved from freelance to full-time live and studio guitarist/vocalist, and then graduated to freelance band leader for the agency it became apparent to me that unfortunately business and numbers often overtook the importance of music. I decided it was time to organize and lead a band where music and performance was first and foremost. I rounded up the best players and singers in town and started my new band New York Edge with lead vocalist Shanti Rajah… who has since become my wife :)
Not long after, as the popularity and demand for live performances by New York Edge (the band) grew, word got out about our “music-first” approach to ALL performances. Musicians, bands and ensembles reached out and New York Edge Music (the full service music and entertainment company) was born.
I was the kid who stood on a dining room chair and belted out a song for anyone who would listen :)
I was born and raised in Manhattan, the mixed-race daughter of an Indian-Sri Lankan dad and an Irish-American mother. Despite my dad’s best efforts to steer me towards doctor or engineer I fell in love with music and performing.
For my 8th birthday I begged for a guitar and a book of chords and I proceeded to teach myself to play songs that I wanted to sing. At 10 I put together my first band… of course I was the lead vocalist :) I studied voice, dance (ballet, tap, Bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance) and acting, and by high school I started doing studio sessions and playing the club circuit.
Comprehensive and amazingly eclectic is really the only way to describe the incredible diversity of music that I was exposed to growing up. Gospel and traditional Indian-Sri Lankan music courtesy of my dad; pop and rock courtesy of my Brooklyn-born and raised mom; and an incomparable array of concerts, shows, and clubs courtesy of my home-town New York City.
Working as a freelance musician in college, I was quickly hired by a “big office” (“big office” is musician-speak for agencies that hire freelance musicians for multiple bands and performances) where I met Rich and tons of musicians, and sharpened my performance skills at 100’s of concerts, events and weddings. I became aware of the all too prevalent business over music focus that dominated at the “big offices” so when Rich approached me about starting New York Edge with him I jumped!
I constantly draw on my unique and diverse music perspective to help drive my creative and sometimes surprising but recognizable music selections. I LOVE to perform and I deeply feel that music is all about the shared community experience of performer and audience so I am SO thrilled that our reputation for music-first has grown into New York Edge Music.
