A cool view — Super-Moon over NYC, New York Edge performing at Jersey City Hyatt

We're Thrilled You Found Us!

There are a lot of bands around and on the surface many of them seem more similar than different.

Weighing The Components

Is the band experienced?
Is the band reliable?
Is the band accessable?

The thing you know you love and want, but you just can't describe it

Both the fun and the practical components are great ways to narrow the field, but its the combination of all three components that really tells a band's true story. If you look beyond the surface, that's where the differences between bands really become clear.

The intangible: The ”wow” factor. This elusive component is the most difficult to ascertain, and often the most overlooked by couples hiring music for their wedding. A band needs to have that “wow” factor — that “je ne sais quoi” — that crowds just find magnetic. In the case of an event band, that “wow” factor needs to extend to the dance floor. As much as New York Edge has all of the fun factors (repertoire, performance, and reviews) AND the practical factors (price, experience, reliability, and accessability) covered — totally and completely :) — we are proudest of the fact that we are one of the select event bands that crowds just find completely irresistible to dance to. ”People just dance at New York Edge parties” is the most frequent comment we get from guests at our events, and to us THIS IS EVERYTHING!!! We feel that creating a dance party celebration atmosphere is the MOST important aspect to consider when hiring music for your wedding. After all isn't that why your hiring music?

"We keep your dance floor packed! We have an uncanny ability to ready the crowd and set the stage for that tangible, palpable sense of community that happens when music and dancing is enjoyed with your closest friends and family. No single aspect of your reception has more impact on your guests' experience of your party than music."

Are you a set band?

Yes, we are a set band of full time, professional musicians. We are not a music collective or a music agency. We perform together ALL the time.

How many people are in the band?

Our band size is scalable. We start at 7 and go to over 12 pieces.

Our 12 piece band is: a four piece rhythm section, five vocalists, four horns. (Yes, we know that sounds like 13 pieces, but our bandleader Rich does double duty playing guitar AND singing lead vocals :) See above for our instrumentation options at different band sizes.

How can the same band perform at different sizes and still sound awesome?

We write custom arrangements for every band size so we sound awesome and authentic at every size.

Do you play and sing live or do you incorporate sequencers and/or tracks into your performances?

We play and sing EVERYTHING live. NO tracks, NO sequencers.

Do you play continuous music?

Yes! We play continuous LIVE music. We don't put on an mp3 and disappear for a break. We will only DJ music when you request it.

What is the bands repertoire?

Our repertoire is HUGE! As professional, full time, schooled musicians we know a TON of songs and we constantly learn new ones :) Check our repertoire page for artists and styles performed. If there's something special that you'd like to hear just ask… chances are we know it! We stay completely current and we bring new life to all the classics.

Do you own your own equipment and why should I care?

We own all our own professional, state of the art equipment. We own several different sound systems because we perform at so many different venues and we tailor our sound to fit location and number of guests. NO rental stuff… you know how everyone treats that rented car :)

What determines a band's price?

Often the first question we are asked is "How Much?” There are three basic factors that impact a band's price: band size (more or less people), day of the week (Saturday or non-Saturday), and time of year (big wedding month or not-so-big wedding month).

What determines band size?

Band size is determined by three primary things: music styles/sound, visual/audio presentation of the band, and budget.

Does band size impact repertoire?

We perform the same repertoire at all our band sizes from 7 to 12+ pieces. Smaller band sizes may impact repertoire.

What repertoire/music do you play at a wedding?

Weddings are unique because wedding guests are usually mixed ages. Guests have the most fun when they dance! We offer a big mix of the best dance music to span the generations. All the songs we perform feel modern and fresh from classic oldies to current top 40.

Are you full time professional musicians?

YES! We are professional, full time, schooled musicians. Playing music IS what we do. We eat, sleep and breath music, and we love it. To us music is not just a job its a vocation :)

How do you pick what songs to play?

People LOVE to dance to music that they recognize. That said, we always strive to musically surprise and excite guests with our music selections and the way we structure our sets. We always read the room and respond to it; and we never perform the same exact same set twice :) We LOVE to keep each wedding unique, and by learning your personal tastes we include your uniqueness in the music and dancing.

Are you insured?

Yes! As a professional vendor we are fully insured.

Why is band pricing all over the place?

Price is such a big and confusing question it gets two FAQ spots :) So, aside from musicians with instruments, what are you paying for? A higher price does not always equal a better band, and a cheaper price does not always mean the band is a good deal… so how do you find your Goldilocks?

Some things that impact a band's price:
Quantifiable things: band size, band instrumentation, band repertoire, band equipment, and band longevity (always better if you are not a new band's 'practice' wedding :)
Intangible things: the bands level of experience, the quality of service that you receive off of the band-stand (both before and during your wedding), the bands performance skills, the bands talent, and the band's wow factor (yes, these are a bit subjective, but performance, talent and wow-factor totally shine at a live performance. They are the three crucial keys to inspire dancing at your wedding :)

Our perspective is this: We provide the absolute best in quality, repertoire and talent; as well as completely personalized service and attention; all at the absolute best possible price. Our fees go into the music, the talent, the repertoire and the personal service that you receive rather than extraneous expenses that don’t add to the music at your wedding. We know that we are more reasonable than we should be based on both the quantifiable and the intangible factors… but we want to be! Why? Are we crazy? Probably! But we are musicians first, and if its a choice between staying home or playing we’d rather play! We love doing gigs and by keeping our pricing fair we get to do more of them :) We know its your big day — we value that — and we are honored to be a part of it. We are the perfect balance of quality AND value.

Our clients say it best… Check out our reviews, thank you notes, and shout outs!

Why do people dance more to one band than another?

This can only be described as the wow-factor. A band’s wow-factor is the most difficult thing to quantify when you are selecting a band. Ever experience a band (or for that matter a DJ) at a wedding that looks and sounds great but guests only dance in fits and spurts… why? Wow-factor!

We have wow-factor. People just dance with us!

Our clients say it best… Check out our reviews, thank you notes, and shout outs!

What do I need to provide for the band to perform at my event?

Nothing! We are completely self contained for our performances. You provide the party (venue and audience) and we are good to perform!

Why do you want to connect? Just send me a price list… If I like your price and your web-posted music I'll hire you. I can meet and talk to you at my wedding

There is SO much more than price and web clips that goes into making the music on your wedding day amazing. Because its such an important day, we're proud to say we’re a little old school when it comes to connecting with our clients beyond cyber-space. We will be performing in person for you and all of your guests, so we want to connect with you in a very real way. We are not content with "pick a price, pick a band size, email us any particulars you think we should know, maybe have a phone chat the week-of the wedding, and we’ll see you there." We are not Amazon. We want to connect with you, learn your tastes, cover all the music planning details and special touches that make the music at the wedding truly yours. It's an important, once in a lifetime, detail filled, amazing day. We know you feel the same :)

Yes! Upon request. It so happens that 3 band members DJ so anything you would like DJ'd is no problem :)

Do you have understudies?

We treat it like a Broadway show... We have under-studies all set "just in case." We've almost never used them, but as professionals its like insurance… you have it and hope you never need it.

A DJ is less expensive so why live music?

When you’re thinking music this is THE question. It's a question that many people struggle with. As awesome and amazing as a wedding is, a wedding is costly and everyone struggles with how and where to allocate budget. Often music gets put further down the totem pole than it should (I know we’re a music company so we are probably a bit biased) but your wedding is not just a dinner, and not just a gathering of friends and family. Your wedding is a celebration! When throwing a wedding it is important to decide what your celebration means to you, and if it means celebrating and dancing with your guests… that’s where music comes in! At the end of the night the good time that was had by all is what all guests remember the most. Live music adds wow, energy, entertainment and life. There is no more impactful way to enjoy music than by experiencing it performed live, and when live music is expertly played and the performances are electric there is nothing more memorable and special. It's different than a DJ… we know you feel the same :)

How do you decide how to configure the band, ie. which musicians and which singers?

All dance bands start with a rhythm section: bass, drums, keys and guitar. All dance bands need at least 2 vocalists: male and female. This is a 6 piece band and why we start at 6 pieces :) Once you've got the heart and soul of the band, now you can add all the flavors that add dimension, presence and wow to the band and make your night unique.

What do you wear?

Unless you your request otherwise, we dress in formal wear. We feel your wedding is a once in a lifetime special event and our dress should reflect that. However, like everyone, we have closets full of clothes, and if your vision for your special day calls for less formal attire, or even "musician-like" attire rest assured we have that too… after all we are musicians :)

Musically… Where are you coming from?

We are professional musicians routed in the jazz tradition. Why jazz? Because trained Jazz players combine expert skill and musicianship as well as expert flexibility and spontaneity. The ability to be flexible and go with the flow of the crowd is crucial to an events success and improv is at the very core of Jazz. With our strong roots and our passion for music we are proficient in all the many styles and specialties that go into making a wedding amazing.

Is there a formula… how many band members for how many guests?

Band size is determined by the music styles the band is going to play and the presentation that you want to make. U2 is 4 guys and Earth, Wind and Fire is 12 guys. Both great bands!

How long do you play?

Most wedding receptions are 4 hours… so we play for 4 hours :) Many couples have us play for their cocktail hour and/or their ceremonies as well so the music is seamless. Most cocktail hours are, as the name says, 1 hour in length; and most couples hire a soloist or a two to four piece ensemble to set the ambiance. Most wedding ceremonies are shorter than 1 hour, but we allocate a full hour of music to a wedding ceremony so that your guests will experience your ceremony atmosphere as they are entering, being seated and waiting for your ceremony to begin :) All this said, all timing is customizable.

I love the music… now what do I do?

Reach out! Let's talk about YOUR wedding! We respond within hours (unless we are performing - in which case we'll reach out after the gig :) Experience the New York Edge!

"Thank you SO much for helping to make our wedding the best day of our lives. You were so responsive to everything we wanted and did an incredible job reading the room. Everyone kept telling us how amazing you guys were!!!! You and your band are truly incredible."
